Aim of the writings

Past few years have seen momentous shift in legal and procedural aspects of handling tax related issues. The Country has seen creation of infrastructure at a massive scale to handle tax related processing. Faceless assessments have become a reality.  New data collection and mining techniques have sufficiently enabled officers. Contact-less approach, while offering protection to tax payers, has resulted in new challenges, both for the officers as well as tax payers. In absence of specific windows where taxpayer can approach for clarifications or resolving disputes, it is necessary that they are educated on various issues in a reliable and transparent way. It is equally essential that issues faced by tax payers as well as authorities are discussed on an open forum.

About the author

The author is a Mechanical cum Computer Engineer by education. After investing roughly 8 years in project implementation area while serving in Engineers India Limited and ONGC, he opted to join Indian Revenue Service in 1993. He has served at various levels in the Income Tax Department for 29 years. In these long years, he had considerable exposure in the areas of International Taxation, Transfer Pricing, Corporate Finance and Taxation, Search and Seizure matters and cases related to Black Money Act of 2015. He has also undergone extensive training in all these areas, both inside and outside the country and commands a reputation for his extensive knowledge on these issues. While in service and subsequently, he has been sharing his knowledge at various forum including lectures to probationers at National Academy of Direct Taxes, Regional Training Institutes as well as in programs organised by Tax Practitioners / CAs. He has also been contributing to journals like Tax Sutra on contemporary issues related to taxation.

In dealing with taxpayers while in the Department, his experience has been that taxpayers are not advised in a transparent and correct way, especially in the areas of high expertise. Due to stiff competition, some professionals promise the taxpayers the moon rather than guiding them properly, thus leading them into un-necessary litigation. Income Tax has become an area where there is perceived lack of trust between taxpayer, professional and authorities and hence hesitancy in taxpayers’ minds to approach authorities to seek clarification. With an avowed aim to improve such mutual trust, improve quality of advice and introduce excellence in promised service, the author invites all the stake holders to take part in the discussion which this forum throws open.
